Every foreigner who wants to stay in the Czech Republic must have and pay health insurance.
The following are participants of the public health insurance system
- Citizens of the Czech Republic residing the Czech Republic
- Foreigners with permanent residence in the Czech Republic
- Foreigners who are employed by a company with its headquarters in the Czech Republic
- Applicants for international protection
- Asylum seekers, or seekers of additional protection, in some cases foreigners with a tolerated residence visa
A person can enter into the public health insurance system by submitting an application for international protection, granting asylum or additional protection, by obtaining permanent residence in the Czech Republic, on the day when they become an employee of a company in the Czech Republic, or birth - if they are born to a person who has permanent residence in the Czech Republic. The following are participants of the Comprehensive Health Insurance system
- foreigners with a long-term visa or residence – so long as they are not employees of a company with its headquarters in the Czech Republic
- foreigners with temporary residence in the EU as family members.
The insurance limit is a minimum of 60,000 euros. This insurance must be paid for the entire length of stay and must be negotiated only with an insurance company authorized to provide such insurance in the Czech Republic. If an application for a stay is submitted from abroad, a person can be insured by an insurance company which also operates in other EU Member States or the EEC and works in the state of which the foreigner is a citizen, or in which he or she has permission to stay.
Comprehensive health care means health care provided to the insured party in the contractual healthcare facilities of the insurer without direct reimbursement of costs for treating the insured party with the aim to maintain his or her health condition from before concluding the insurance policy. From this insurance may not be excluded preventive or dispensary medical care or health care related to pregnancy of an insured mother and birth of her child. The terms of payment for an insured loss and possible exclusions from insurance are the subject of a contract - be mindful when signing it. Health insurance for foreigners in case of an emergency and urgent care is intended for foreigners who intend to reside in the Czech Republic for a maximum period of 90 days and apply for a short-term visa, or intend to reside in the Czech Republic for more than 90 days and apply for long term visa or residence. It can also be utilized by foreigners with temporary residence. This insurance is sufficient if a visa is applied for at an embassy of the Czech Republic abroad.
